In simultaneous interpreting, when to start interpreting and thereafter how far apart should the interpreter keep from the speaker, or, the management of ear-voice span(EVS) has always been a question of interest. While it is necessary to give the speaker a head start so as to obtain enough information to produce an understandable target language version of the speech the longer the interpreter waits, as short-term memory load and the psychological pressure increase, the risks also become higherThere have been some academic discussions about EVS. They are mainly about the duration of EVS in different language pairs and how different variables would influence the length of EVS correspondingly. However, few have identified their methods of calculating EVS in English and Chinese as a language pair and compared the differences between professional interpreter and student interpreter in their performances. Through an empirical study, this thesis tries to narrow the gap by finding out the differences and features in EVS in the Chinese to English SI performance. This thesis sets out to find out the different features of professional interpreters and interpreting trainees in their EVS in C-E SI. By conducting experiments and analyzing the data collected, the thesis tries to answer the following questions:1) What differences may exist between professional interpreters and interpreting trainees in their EVS in C-E SI? 2) What may be the causes for the differences found? The thesis attempts to identify the differences between professional interpreters and interpreting trainees in their EVS in C-E SI and the causes behind them. Implications will be lastly contributed to the training of interpreter trainees in terms of how to better manage their EVS in C-E SI.
