In 2007, The State Council established Master of Translation & Interpretation(MTI), for the purpose of cultivating competent conference interpreters with global horizon and profound cross-cultural vision. Up to now, of those 206 colleges /universities with MTI program, some leading schools, SITS in GDUFS, for instance, has been running Conference Interpreting(CI)program. Nevertheless, are those candidates satisfied with the courses delivered? Are they qualified enough to meet the social demands? Is the current curriculum feasible? These questions are desired to be answered via a series of research.For the purpose of bettering the curriculum of CI, the author tries to conduct a comparison study on the curriculum designing both in School of Interpreting & Translation Studies(SITS) in Guangdong University of Foreign Studies(GDUFS) and Graduate School of Translation, Interpretation & Language Education(GSTILE) in Monterey Institute of International Studies(MIIS) in the United States, valuing their respective merits, penetrating drawbacks, putting forward some suggestions, and thus discovering what a practical curriculum should be for Chinese MTI-CI.Based on a comparative study on the curriculum of Master of Arts in Conference Interpretation of GSTILE in MIIS and Master of Translation and Interpreting(Conference Interpretation Orientation) of SITS in GDUFS, this empirical research is aimed to explore the feasibility of CI program carried out in graduate schools home and abroad via questionnaires and face-to-face interviews. Research questions are as follows:Q1: What are the features of Conference Interpreting curriculum of GDUFS and MIIS?Q2: What are the merits and demerits of these features?Q3: How much could candidates benefit from the respective curriculum?Q4: What could be improved for MTI-CI program?The author intends to carry out independent research and draw conclusions based on solid secondary material gathered from MIIS official website and GDUFS official resources.The first hand data is gathered by the author via questionnaires and small interviews to find out what advantages both institutions possess, which could be helpful for the improvement of conference interpreting program in graduate schools. This survey report hopes to make contribution to the flourishing and promising conference interpreting industry in China.
