| This is a report on the translation of the first six chapters of Three Times The Love--Finding Answers and Hope for Our Triplets with Autism, a book co-authored by Randy Gaston and his wife Lynn Gaston. The excerpts tell a story about an ordinary American family trying every possible means to conceive and bearing triplets who are diagnosed with autism later. The couple struggle to find therapies for autism and finally succeed. Through this translation project, the author has not only mastered the skills of translating long sentences, technical terms and rhetoric. She hopes to spread relevant knowledge about autism so that society can pay more attention to children with that disease and offer them more guidance and encouragement. With the help of online dictionaries, the author translates excerpts from English to Chinese after analyzing and referring to three parallel texts:An Early Start for Your Child with Autism:Using Everyday Activities to Help Kids Connect,Communicate, and Learn;Growing up with Sons with Autism I--Lessons from Personal Parenting Experience(《与自é—症儿ååŒè¡Œ1——原æ±åŽŸå‘³çš„育儿》);The Verbal Behavior Approach:How to Teach Children with Autism and Related Disorders(《è¯è¨€è¡Œä¸ºæ–¹æ³•:如何教育å¤ç‹¬ç—‡å’Œç›¸å…³éšœç¢å„¿ç«¥ã€‹.Armed with Skopos theory, the author accomplishes the translation project by using specific translation strategies such as decomposition and conversion. The report finds out that decomposition is of great significance to the translation of long sentences while conversion is employed as a result of the differences between Chinese and English in terms of the word order and the voice. It is these strategies(which also includes addition, literal translation and reconstruction) that keep the translation smooth and readable. The limitation of this thesis lies in the fact that some terms are not translated accurately due to the limited knowledge of the author. The report is composed of six parts: an overview of the translation project, the research background, the translation process and quality control, case study, conclusions and references. The author is convinced that this report is of value to the translation of relevant materials about autism. |
