In traditional Chinese culture, folk paper-cut art is widely circulated. Paper-cut is a very typical handmade folk art, which is the fruit of majority of workers’ wisdom, but also carries the spiritual sustenance of folk artisans for happy life. Ku Shulan who is known as the Chinese folk arts and crafts master and entitled as "Lady of cutting flowers" in Guanzhong Xunyi area is an outstanding one in the successors of this folk art.Ku Shulan paper-cut art still remains the practical, multi-function and artistic utility property of original art, which is a kind of art vein with multiple layers. In her paper-cut works, the shape, composition and color is based on traditional art form, using extraordinary imagination to integrate her unique new folk features and aesthetic significance into it. Ku Shulan paper-cut broke the creation forms that heritage with mere imitation in the traditional paper-cut art and made folk paper-cut art got new innovations.The topic takes the existing Ku Shulan paper-cut works as the major theoretical basis and research object, through sorting, induction and other methods of theoretical research, summarizes the artistic characteristics of Ku Shulan paper-cut art in shape, composition, color and other aspects, from which draw the typical visual symbols features of Ku Shulan paper-cut art. On this basis, combining the existing visual manifestation form in contemporary design, try to find a fit point between the two and conduct systematical and scientific demonstration for it, to find the basis that this theory can be realized, providing complete and reliable theoretical support for the application of visual symbols in the design in Ku Shulan paper-cut art. This theory research not only re-explores Ku Shulan paper-cut art’s value, but also provides a new visual expression symbol for contemporary visual design theory; which is not only a scientific and effective protection for Chinese traditional folk arts and crafts, but also figures out the theoretical connectivity between modern design and tradition.
