The Analysis Of Situated Cognition

Abstract:cognition always relies upon our interaction with situation. Situationality and embodiment have become very important concepts in the research filed of modern cognitive science. Lots of researchers emphasize the importance of subjective experience in cognition process, and advocate exploring the essence of cognition in the interaction between intellectual body and environment. In this way, the internal representation and computing concept advocated by cognitivism subjected to great criticism. People more and more pay attention to the influence of body, environment, and social-cultural status on cognition process. Therefore, it is very necessary to conduct systematic and profound discussion on situated cognition.This paper is composed by introduction, four thematic expositions and conclusion. The introduction illustrated the topic selection, theme, writing framework and research significance of this paper, thereby stating the necessity of conducting discussion on situated cognition. Then it elaborated theme in four parts. Part one mainly explored the theoretical source and philosophical basis of situated cognition, and the source and theoretical basis of situated cognition can be clearly seen from the analysis on three routes of the development of cognitive science. Part two concentrated on discussing three viewpoints in current situated cognition theory, i.e. embodied cognition, extended cognition and situation embedded cognition. By virtue of elaboration on three cognitive viewpoints, the theoretical proposition of situated cognition can be basically mastered, thereby better understanding situated cognition. Part three concentrated on discussing several factors influencing cognitive process, and it mainly discussed from three aspects: correlation between cognition and environment, correlation between cognition and social-culture, and correlation between cognition and tools. A rich, three-dimensional and systematic understanding on the situationality of cognition can be basically obtained via elaboration on such three aspects, which is beneficial for mastering situated cognition theory on the whole. Part four mainly presented the theoretical significance and philosophical implication of situated cognition. In addition, this paper discussed from the following four aspects:new thoughts on the research of artificial intelligence under the perspective of situated cognition; possible amendment of binary relations between body and mind; integration between scientism and humanism research orientations in psychology; and introspection on cognitivism. The final part of this paper made conclusions on situated cognition, and prospected on the development of cognitive science in future.
