The literary arts with regard to Chinese people’s anti-Japan war during WWII have achieved remarkable reputation in the history of literature and taken significant influence on the development of Chinese contemporary literature. Most works of which provide a merciless picture about the brutality of the war as well as the unforgotten experiences of suffering for ordinary people from both countries, expressing strictly anti-war sentiment and good wishes for seeking peace and love. As one of the most important themes of Chinese literature and art during 20th century, a large amount of works about Anti-Japanese War were derived from indigenous folklore, or initially created by scholars then widely circulated and spread by the people. Both folk and fine art composed an unprecedented chapter in salvation culture, inspiring Chinese people to defend the homeland against invaders and pursuit peaceful life. These spiritual foods had become indispensable during the period of the war. For the art research of anti-Japanese war, however, there is a significantly narrative tendency that researchers usually pay much higher attention to the fine art, while awfully overlook the importance of folk literature and art. Featuring the specifically historical and geographical characteristics of Tai-hang Mountain, this thesis tries to fill part of the vacancy by comprehensively investigating and organizing the raw materials of folk literature and art that scatter in Tai-hang revolutionary base area, and deeply exploring the social and historical background. In addition, the ecological literature and art theory has also been utilized to further analyze the properties and functions of folk literature and art.This thesis is divided into five parts. First is the introduction, in which the selected-topic background, literatures review, research methods, and data resources are briefly discussed. The second chapter is about the background of folk literature and art in Tai-hang anti-Japanese base area in terms of geographic system, social and historical condition, as well as resources of literature creation. It reveals natural conditions and social foundations by which the folk literature and art can exist, and the correlation and interaction between the folk literature and external social environment. The third chapter is about the theme expression of folk literary.As the popular resistance became the only theme in the era background during the period of anti-Japanese war, the folk form is one of the main ways of showing national forms. This chapter chooses three folk forms which represent the characteristics of Tai-hang anti-Japanese base area in that period that is folk art type:folk songs, folk tales, and folk dramas. By the research, it will highlight the nation-state voice and the characteristics of nationalization and popularization. The fourth chapter is about the function analysis of folk literature and art in Tai-hang anti-Japanese base area. Ecological function is the ultimate goal of literary ecology research. This chapter will discuss positive roles of folk literature and art in maintaining the harmony between men and society, guiding the national spirits, and the constructing ecological and cultural conceptions, from Ecological aesthetics, ecological criticism, and ecological regulation of folk literature and art. Finally, this paper summarizes the nature of the folk literature and art during the Anti-Japanese War. By the exhibition of nationalism and patriotism which folk literature and art reflects in Tai-hang-area people’s fight against the aggression, this paper fully affirms the important position of folk literature and art in the resistance against Japan in modern literary research.
