Lin Xiyi’s "Chuang-tzu Yi" is one of the representative comment writings on "Chuang-tzu" in Southern Song Dynasty. Based on the academic spirit of Ai Xuan School and the literary style of the Lake Poets, this paper mainly studies the prose characteristic of the book "Chuang-tzu Yi" and looks into its cultural background and international influences.The text is divided into three chapters:In Chapter One, it first gives a general description of the life and works of Lin Xiyi; then it goes on to introduce the social and cultural background of his book "Chuang-tzu Yi". It analyzes the academic characteristics and the lecturing mode of Aixuan School. More importantly, it emphasizes the exegesis concept of the school—they always focus on the value of the text itself. Based on these analysis, it explains how the academic characteristics of Aixuan School influenced on the compilation, especially the structure of the book. Besides, the paper takes a close look at the linguistic features and writing style of the Lake Poets, and tracks down their traces in the linguistic and rhetoric use in "Chuang-tzu Yi". What’s more, it aims to detect the impact of the Lake Poets on the proposing of the theory of "Variable Change", which refers to the free and natural, elegant and variable writing style of "Chuang-tzu".Chapter Two makes a detailed interpretation of the literary environment based on the study of "Chuang-tzu Yi". The birth of any literary works is closely related to its social background at that time. The impact of social environment on literature is huge, and in the other way around we can get to know the social situation through the study of literary works. In this chapter, it mainly interprets the humanistic environment and literature features of Southern Song Dynasty.Chapter Three focuses on the influences and spread of the book "Chuang-tzu Yi". Mr Lin’s comments on "Chuang-tzu" from a pure literary perspective changed the research direction and opened a new path for the scholars and researchers in Ming and Qing dynasties. The spread of "Chuang-tzu Yi" has made an indelible contribution to the cultural communication between China and Japan.
