With acceleration of economic globalization and booming innovation of science and technology, international technical exchanges and cooperation have become increasingly extensive in the field of urban transportation. Placing a priority on the development of the modes of urban public transport has gradually become a consensus among the cities. Today, more and more advanced knowledge and important achievements in the field of urban transit systems and technology are introduced to China, which plays an increasingly important role in enhancing national economic development and convenience of people’s life. Accordingly, domestic demands for translating urban transit English texts are on the increase. However, many technical experts involved in this field have no time or are unable to translate urban transit English texts, therefore, professional translators undoubtedly undertake the important mission of spreading the knowledge of the international advanced urban transit systems and technology.The thesis, taking the author’s participation in the translation project-- translating the book Urban Transit Systems and Technology as an example, firstly makes a detailed description of the translation project and its requirements. Secondly, the thesis illustrates the types and characteristics of urban transit English, and finally by presenting over 30 typical examples from the author’s translation practice, the thesis gives a thorough analysis of three important translation principles which should be followed during the course of translating urban transit English texts. Three translation principles are standard and accuracy in language, logic in sentence structure and appropriateness in word choice. What’s more, the thesis explores effective translation strategies and techniques employed in the course of translation, including literality, syntactic linearity, amplification and conversion. In addition, the author puts an emphasis on the importance of making best of a variety of ways to achieve the best result of the translation, for example, getting well-prepared for the glossary and parallel texts, making acquaintance with the relevant background knowledge, skillfully using the network resources and actively consulting the technical experts, and so on. Only in this way can the technical terms and translated versions be achieved accurately and smoothly, and the quality of the translation be accomplishec greatly.In the end, the author makes a summary about the translation project, and concludes that the translation project was accomplished on schedule successfully with the cooperative efforts of all the members involved and was affirmed by the clients of the project, and leaders and teachers from School of Foreign Languages and Cultures of Chengdu University of Technology (CDUT) as well. Through this translatior practice, the author is convinced that translation is bound up with hardships anc challenges. Meanwhile, the author summarizes the basic requirements of being a qualified translator. In short, the translator should practice a lot to improve his or he(?) translating ability and should spare no efforts to read extensively and achieve mastery through a comprehensive study for being a qualified translator with great persistence.It is hoped that the findings of the research on this translation practice may somehow be of some help for the translators who are working on such parallel texts ir the field of urban transportation and may be of great promotion for the development of urban transit systems and technology in China.
