Strategies In Translating Scientific And Technical Texts

As exchange and communication between China and other countries in areas like politics, economy, culture and so on are expanding, large numbers of professional texts, such as those on finance, law, business, science and technology and so on, are substantially increasing. Under this circumstance, professional translators are urgently needed for the growing market. When translators translate a certain type of text, they have to take into consideration of the characteristics of different types of texts and their translation principles and strategies. Meanwhile, translators need to acquire as more background knowledge as possible for every professional text besides knowledge concerning their profession. As for different types of texts, translators have to maintain a case-by-case principle and display their subjective initiative in order to splendidly fulfill their translation task.In this thesis, I mainly elaborate translation strategies in scientific and technological texts. First of all, I start from characteristics of scientific and technological texts, or to be more exactly, characteristics of words, sentences and paragraphs in scientific and technological texts. Next, I analyze translation principles which include the principle of translators'cooperation in scientific and technological texts. After that, I introduce a specific case—Development of IMAX in China to support my dissertation of translation strategies in scientific and technological texts, or to be more exactly, translation strategies of words, sentences and paragraphs in scientific and technological texts. Meanwhile, I express my views, from a comparatively original perspective, on translators'cooperation principles, namely, the consistent principle, in the process of translating a certain type of text and translators cooperation strategies for tackling words, sentences and paragraphs. Professional translation is a complex and difficult task, which requires translators to understand characteristics, principles and strategies of professional translation as well as to display their subjective initiative and maintain a flexible and skillful manner in translating different types of professional texts.
