Legal text is a kind of specialized text, which bristles with technical terms, rigorous in logic and complex in sentence structure. The distinctive features of legal text make it difficult for translators to offer a high-quality translation.Under the background of more and more frequent international exchanges, the translation of legal texts is becoming increasingly important.Higher Education and Research Act is a typical legal text passed by the UK in 2017 to promote the reform of higher education. Its English-Chinese translation has certain value of reference for the management methods and systematic innovation of domestic universities.Meanwhile, the research on the translation of legal English texts in the field of higher education law is conducive to promoting China's higher education management system to better meet international standards and adapt to global competition.Nowadays, there is an urgent need for high-quality legal translations. In order to further improve the quality of legal translations,it is necessary to explore more systematic and operable translation theories and strategies in translating legal texts. In the Essay on the Principles of Translation,Tytler proposes three principles to improve the quality of translation. He defines what “a good translation” is and then puts forward three principles systematically and comprehensively. The first principle is that the translation should give a complete transcript of the ideas of the original work;the second principle is that the style and manner of writing should be of the same character with that of the original;the third principle is that the translation should have all the ease of original composition. The order of the three principles is strictly arranged according to the difference of their priority and the order should not be reversed. As to the translation of legal texts, special attention should be paid to the accuracy of technical term, the equivalence of style and the smoothness of legal language,so Tytler's Three Principles of Translation can provide a better theoretical guidance for the translation practice of legal texts.Under the guidance of Tytler's Three Principles of Translation, the thesis takesHigher Education and Research Act as an example, and summarizes the language features of legal texts through an in-depth analysis, namely the accuracy and expertise in content, solemnity and rigorousness in style,as well as conciseness and consistency in expression. The author of this thesis then explores some strategies for translating English legal texts based on specific examples of translation practice, and finally puts forward the strategies for reproducing accurate ideas of the legal text, conforming to the style of legal text, and preserving the ease of legal text.In the conclusion, the thesis summarizes the achievements and limitations of the research, and makes some suggestions for future research,so as to offer reference for the translation practice of legal texts.
