A Report On Translation Of Two English Agreements Into Chinese

As foreign exchange activities are getting more frequent nowadays,legal translation is increasingly needed,especially translation of English agreements.An agreement stipulates the rights and obligations of both parties.Therefore,it is of much practical value to study and translate English agreements so that both parties may get familiar with the content of agreements and avoid ambiguity.This report is a case study of Brokerage/Salesperson Employment Agreement and Assured Shorthold Tenancy Agreement.First,this report briefly states the background,overviews relevant literature,and mentions the significance and content of this translation report.Next,it discusses the linguistic characteristics of the source text at lexical,syntactic and textual levels before it presents the three stages of the translation process,including pretranslation preparations,comprehension and reproduction,as well as proofreading and revision.During translation practice,the author,guided by such translation principles as accuracy,conciseness,consistency,and specialization,illustrates the importance of the translation principles with many examples.Then,it expounds difficult points in lexical,syntactic and textual aspects through use of abundant examples.By means of qualitative and quantitative analysis,the author proves the techniques for translation of archaic words,modal verbs,legal terms,common words with legal concepts,homologous words,conversion of the voices for translation of passive sentences,linear translation,reversed translation,and conversion of parts of speech for translation of long sentences.Besides,the thesis lays emphasis on textual awareness in discourse translation,including cohesion and coherence of sentence groups,the stereotyped and itemized elements in text structure.Finally,the author sums up his findings and points out deficiencies.This report aims to provide reference for researchers on English agreements and help translators of such texts get familiar with the translation principles and techniques in order to improve their translation quality.
