| Sport, as a symbol of social civilization, has become an indispensable part of social and cultural life. With the holding of O lympic Games of London in 2012 and other major international sporting events, English sports news has become an influential subject. For those non-English speaking countries, a good master of sports English is one of the most important factors of impacting on the domestic development of this field. Translation, as a bridge and medium for communication, occupies an important position in sports news reports. However, many domestic scholars have done the related studies of English sports news, which mostly concentrates on its translation methods merely from certain linguistic aspect.Based on relevance theory in cognitive pragmatics, the author tries to explore translation validity of English sports news. It is Finnish linguist-Andrew Chesterman who proposes the notion of translation validity. He holds that translation is a kind of communicative activity, thus translation validity refers to how readers understand the speaker’s intention, which is also considered to measure the success of a translation. In this paper, by analysis of English sports news features such as vocabulary, grammar, syntax and rhetoric figures with concrete instances of English sports news in C hina Daily, New York times, 21 st Century and so on, the author indicates the factors of affecting translation validity of English sports news: linguistic factors including vocabulary, syntax, grammar and rhetoric; extra- linguistic factors including cognitive context, cross-cultural background, and the translator ’s comprehensive qualities in professional knowledge and cross-culture knowledge.Finally, based on the analysis of factors of influencing the validity of English sports news translation, the author offers specific techniques, such as literal translation and liberal translation including interpreting method, adaptive method and amplification method with a purpose of improving translation validity of English sports news, thus providing certain reference to sports news translation practices as well as in-depth related researches. |
