With China’s entry to the WTO and the deepening of reform and opening up, the cultural exchanges between countries are wider and wider, and more and more people are aware of the importance and necessity of western culture. To understand other countries, it is necessary to know something about their literature. The Voyage of the Beagle is the 29 th volume of the Harvard Classics, which introduces Darwin’s travel around the earth on the Beagle to show the reader what he saw, heard and thought in the aspects of geology and biology during the travel. It plays a valuable role in leading the reader into the fields of nature. The writer of this thesis has the honor to participate in the translation of the bookThe Voyage of the Beagle and translated seven chapters out of the 21 chapters of the book(from chapter two to chapter eight). And the translated version which the writer participated in was published in 2014 by Beijing Institute of Technology Press.In this report, the writer selects chapter 3 as the translated text with text type theory and domestication and foreignization theory as the translation theories which guide the writer during the translation project. The writer tries to use these theories to have a research and exploration of travel literature and to solve the problems in the course of translation.This translation report consists of five parts: introduction, description of translation task, process of translation, case analysis and conclusion. The second part is about task description, which presents the task background including the author, content, features of the source text and the requirements for the translation. Part 3 presents the process of translation, which is made up of pre-translation, arrangement after translation and applied theories. The core of this translation report lies in part 4 which discusses translation case analysis in which two aspects are presented: the problems in the practice of translation and the strategies in dealing with the problems. The last part summarizes some thoughts about this translation practice as well as some unsolved problems.
