Political Linguistics is an interdiscipline generated on the basis of political science and linguistics and is closely related to social psychology, culture, folklore and other humanities. The research of political linguistics focuses on how to use language resources to gain political power and manipulate public consciousness. After the Soviet Union, in Russia there has been a series of writings related to political linguistics, which has laid a theoretical foundation for the subsequent development in this field. In recent years, the use of language in public political activities has become a research hotspot for Russian scholars, among which, the discourse analysis of the characteristics of Russian politicians is particularly active. In our country research on the relationship of politics and language has just begun and monographs and papers involving political linguistics are quite rare. There are more to be explored in depth in this area. Based on the reasons mentioned above, the research topic of this thesis is established. On the basis of text analysis, comparative analysis and statistical methods, relying on relevant theories such as political linguistics, lexical stylistics and functional rhetoric, this research carries out a preliminary study on linguo-stylistic features of Russia’s incumbent President Vladimir Putin. The analysis objects in this thesis are texts, audio and video materials selected from the official website of the Russian president (www.kremlin.ru) of several major political events during his third presidency since 2012, including public live wires, large annual press-conferences, the annual state of the Union address and so on.The innovation of this paper lies in: first, we conduct in-depth academic study on the empirical language materials of Russian politicians, which is lacking in investigation; Second, we analyze systematically the language image of Putin relying on the related theories. The thesis consists of introduction, three chapters, conclusion and references. The first chapter establishes the theoretical basis of the study, systematically combs the history and research objects of political linguistics, elaborates "political discourse", "language personality" and other concepts, describes the definition of "verbal portrait" and typical characteristics of "speech acts", and briefly summarizes the main viewing angle of Russian scholars to study the characteristics of Putin’s speech. Overall, Putin’s speech is analysed from angles like communication, genre, voice and so on. It is found that the vast majority of Russian scholars tend to summarize Putin’s speech characteristics through the depth analysis of plain texts from various dimensions. The second chapter analyzes features of Putin’s public speeches in three aspects: phonetics, lexis and syntax. Putin is very good at using logical accents, pauses and different types of tones to highlight the center of the phrases, together with inversions and repetitions to emphasize key points in the speeches; in addition, other means such as voice intensity, voice length are also widely used in his speeches so as to enhance his personal expressive force and characteristics.Putin’s speech text is highly normative. Through description and analysis of numerous examples, it is found that this feature is reflected in the lexical level (for example, flexible use of personal pronouns mbl and R, verb oyMaro, noemopwo, Hadewcb, measure and degree adverbs); secondly, it is reflected in the syntax level (for example, parallel sentences, inversion structures, segmented components, etc.).A range of grammatical means in Putin’s speeches are aimed at drawing special attention of the audience, so that important information can be clearly imprinted in their minds. In all of the grammatical means, the pronoun used as segmented components is particularly special. Due to the limitation of the effective memory in moment, speakers usually put the theme of the speech out first before they completely go through the statement in their minds, and then repeat the pronoun to complete the sentences. Putin takes full advantage of this means to alleviate the burden of memory while emphasizing the focus of the speech. The third chapter explores the rhetorical characteristics of Putin’s public speeches from the points of view of the rhetorical emphasis, body language and communication. In order to enhance the expressive and emotional effects, Putin frequently uses rhetorical devices like metaphor, hierarchical rhetoric, personification, irony, rhetorical questions and so on. Based on the research of Russian spoken language expert A. Lapteva and Chinese scholar Wang Jiafei, Putin’s public speeches are defined from the angle of genre as a special kind of lecture, which is an organic combination of written language and spoken language, dialogue and monologue. This judgment is embodied in the phonetic, lexical and syntactic levels. In addition, we summarize the communication characteristics reflected in Putin’s public speeches from the angles of communicative models and dialogism. In the communication process, Putin follows strict etiquette mode and keeps establishing contact with the listeners all the time. This thesis focuses on extended analysis on this particular language means of "Dialogue". It can be concluded that the use of apostrophe, direct quotation and question answering structure in the speeches produces great effectiveness for positive communication and thought simulation thus to narrow down the psychological distance between the speaker and the listeners. Conclusion part summarizes the thesis.
