A Translation Project Report Of Mr. Standfast (Chapters1-2)

This thesis is a Translation Project report on the first and second chapter of Mr. Steadfast, written by John Buchan. The titles of these two chapters are "The Wicket-Gate" and "The Village Named Morality", respectively, the first chapter describes the setting of story and main characters. As a royal agent of Britain, the protagonist got a new task to investigate someone in the village after the First World War. Chapter 2 talks about the "Village Named Morality" from environment, people, time and other aspects. As the beginning of suspense story, the two chapters include almost all clues of this story with complex details and vivid characters. Furthermore, its words and sentences have distinctive features of that time. This report has four parts. The first part is a general introduction of this project, including its background, significance of translation and target. The second part mainly covers the detailed analysis of source text, consisting of contents and linguistic characteristics. Next part introduces translation strategies adopted on the basis of Skopos Theory and analysis of corresponding examples. The fourth part states a summary of whole translation process. Because the book is an early western suspense novel, its language is slightly different from modern English. For this reason, some corresponding translation skills and strategies are chosen based on the Skopos Theory to ensure a high readability of translation version.
