Jao tsung-i is a famous litterateur,scribe,archaeologist,calligrapher and painter in the modern China.He is a scholar who has a thorough knowledge of both western and traditional Chinese,and has a lot of outstanding academic achievements in many academic sectors.And also in calligraphy.Based on the prior studies by other people,this paper will has a systematically discuss about Jao tsung-i’s calligraphy origin, calligraphy theory, calligraphic style and appreciation and analysis of his calligraphy works,and literati calligraphy. We can know from the discussion:Jao tsung-i not only respecting for tradition but also has a spirit of innovation. This characteristic not just shows in Jao tsung-i’s calligraphy origin,but even in all of his academic sectors. Jao tsung-i’s achievements of calligraphy theory concentrated reflect in his article-Ten Points of the Theory of Chines Calligraphy Jao tsung-i had made a detail description of these ten points in the book Six Questions about Chinese Calligraphy Jao tsung-i’s calligraphy is a typical literati calligraphy,has typical characteristic of literati. His calligraphy art pursues simplicity, ancient melody,like nature itself -highest quality,and create a system of his own. Except that,we need self-examination about how Jao tsung-i made the artistic appreciation and calligraphy art well complement each other.
