Objective In this work, the mental health status of male inmates in Hunan province is investigated and analyzed. By understanding their main problem and analyzing the main factors, we provide a scientific basis of taking targeted intervention measures and future improvements.Method To take the cluster random sampling method, we choose 5 prisons, and then selected 40 male inmates from every prison randomly, which get a total of 200 people served as the research object. We investigate the basic information of the inmates, mental health and its influencing factors by using the self-made questionnaire, Symptom Checklist 90(SCL-90) and Perceived Social Support Scale. On the other hand, a questionnaire of 50 people aimed at organs, schools and enterprises in Hengyang city is taken randomly. Our test uses the collective means, which is under the unified instruction. The experimenter explains the purpose and significance of the questionnaire, and promises that the personal information and the results of the survey will be kept secret strictly, which can let the testers get rid of the mind burden and make a realistic evaluation to the scale according to their own real situation. The test time will be controlled in 60 minutes.Results 1. The measurement results of male inmates by SCL-90 in Hunan provinceOn the basis of the measurement results of SCL-90 and dividing three or more points in the light of one or more than one factors to make a positive screening, we can get the following results: The positive detection rate of male inmates’ mental disorder in Hunan province is 51.71%; Positive screening shall be carried out in accordance with the total score over 160 points, and the positive detection rate of male inmates’ psychological barriers in Hunan province is 48.84%; The various factors of psychological problems that reach more than moderate are arranged from high to low: hostile, anxiety, depression, interpersonal relationship, forcing, summarization, paranoia, horror and psychotics; There are differences in inmates mental disorder of different age groups(p = 0.046), and the older you are, the lower is the rate; The inmates’ mental health disorders rate of the married is lower than that of the unmarried, divorced or widowed(p = 0.039); There are differences of the mental health disorders rates between inmates from diverse educational backgrounds; The differences of the mental health disorders rates in the inmates who have different serving term have statistical significance(p = 0.045);The psychological barrier of the official crime is lower than that of the non-duty crime; The various factor scores of male inmates by SCL-90 in Hunan province are higher than that of the general population(p < 0.05).2. The measurement results of male inmates by Perceived Social Support Scale in Hunan provinceOn the Perceived Social Support Scale, There are significant differences between the male inmates and the general population in the total score of discipline(or lead) support, family support, the inmates(or colleagues) support, friend support and social support.Specifically, first of all, the social support of the inmates from discipline significantly higher than that of the ordinary people from the leader. However, the social support of the inmates from family, fellow inmates and friends is lower than that of ordinary people. Overall, the social support of inmates is outstandingly lower than that of ordinary people. Conclusion 1. The mental health status of the male inmates in Hunan province is poor. Using the SCL-90 scale for detection, we know that the inmates whose average scores of any factor that is equal or greater than 3 accounted for 51.71%, the total score that is equal or greater than 160 points accounted for 48.84%. So these inmates may need to be further tested for mental health. Besides, the total social support scores of the inmates from family, fellow inmates and friends are lower than that of ordinary people.2. The mental health status of male inmates in Hunan province is related to their age, marital status, educational level, prison term, sentence category and social support.
