In instrument performance field, how to interpret a composition is a critical topic. As an indispensable member in western string family, how to give an ideal and high-quality viola performance also need to think about. In viola performance, three most relevant core elements are performer, viola and compositions. These three elements interact with each other and become an indivisible organic unity. Performers(the main body)use viola(the instrument medium) to interpret and express their own artistic understanding about a concrete composition.The article can be divided into two parts:The first part is mainly about theory interpretation. It can be regarded as performers’conscious, conception and be interpretedas innate ’purpose’, ’artistic conception’. So ’conception’,’timbre’,’technique’ all have its respectively predicate meaning.’Conception’ is mainly talking about the relationship between performers and music compositions. It discussed performer (the subject’s comprehensive problems towards the aesthetic object.’Timbre’ is partial to the relationship between viola and compositions. It discusses the music prospect created by the special viola tone color.’Technique’ isa mainly about the relationship between performers and viola. It talks about the differentiation of instrument performing technique types and the technique meaning after performers’ conscious is included. Meanwhile, they are not three separated category and form a very logical inherent cycle system in performance practice process.The second part is chiefly about example analysis based on theory interpretation. Clarke’s Viola Sonata is selected and used to appeal to performers’ attention to unfamous composers and their compositions. It is also to achieve further understanding about this excellent viola piece through comprehensive and concrete analysis.
