The Sheng is an ancient and regular reed instrument It’s one of the eight-category instruments and the only reed instrument that people can blow, perform and use in harmony. Early from 1401 B.C. to 1122 B.C. in the Yin Dynasty, the Sheng was recorded as He in oracle bone script, namely Small Sheng. And it was also mentioned much in the ancient literature. So far the Sheng has a history of three thousand years.Since the founding of New China, the solo art of the Sheng was already booming. And now it has become one of the most representative and expressive national musical instruments in China’s folk music. Through the half-century development of the Sheng, it has experienced three stages, that is, the initial stage, the prosperous stage and the innovation stage. As one of the representatives who witness and participate in these periods, Xu Chaoming has been working as a teacher after graduation from 1967 onward. His compositions and papers, especially on the chord and polyphony of the Sheng,have a tremendous impact on the performance of the Sheng even the whole national instrumental music. In turn, his works, performance, teaching, researches and influences also make us to study the art of the Sheng carefully.The paper is divided into three chapters. The author tries to emphasize on the artistic experiences of Xu Chaoming, the artistic characteristics of his compositions and performance and the development of the Sheng art. From thesystematic analysis and further research, we can better perform his works andaccurately grasp his artistic characteristics. Furthermore, it is conducive to play a positive part in the development of the subject on Sheng and Lusheng.
