"Lux Aetema" by Gyorgy Ligeti(Hungarian,1923-2006)and"Lux Aeterna" by George Crumb(American,1929-)are the research object of this thesis.Through the analysis of techniques and the induction of theory,this paper attempts to summarize and compare the creative features of the two composers.Chapter One first briefly describes Ligeti's creative process,the concept and the background of the creation of the "Lux Aeterna",then his works are deeply analysed.This chapter is focused on the researching of composing techniques,such as the micro-polyphony,macro-polyphony and core chord.Then the profound meaning of the using of religious musical elements are fully explained.Chapter two briefly discusses the creation process and the concept of the Crumb,and then deeply analyzes the work.It concentrates on the composing techniques such as the pitch-class set,diatonic scale and the tone masses and then explains the aesthetic concept and connotation of the multiculturalism of Crumb's symbolism,mysticism and so on.Chapter three,one of the main sections of the thesis,summarizes and analyzes the similarities and differences between the two composers' composing techniques,creative thinkings and the connotations of the works,thus showing the similarities between the two composers which embodied in their own musical languages with unique characteristics and their underlying musical expressions.Furthermore,this paper also involves the relationship between rational logic and emotional demonstration,the contemporary techniques and the connotations in other art cultures.The writer hopes to compensate the lack of relevant research in domestic field and to provide reference and help for Chinese contemporary music composition.
