This paper is focused on studying the intercultural reception of two Chinese movies Farewell My Concubine and Lost in Thailand, in an attempt to discover some common rules in the process of the intercultural communication of Chinese culture. First, in my paper, I concisely describe the relation between Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages and Chinese movies, as well as why and how movies help promote Chinese culture effectively. Then, I categorize the elements of Chinese culture in the two movies into different levels, and investigate how these different levels are received overseas with what I’ve learned from related movie reviews by western media, awards of the two movies, and also ratings and box offices of them. Then, based on my previous analysis of their receptions and overseas moview reviews, I make some conclusions which I think lead to the different receptions of the two movies. In the end, I give recommendations as to how to promote Chinese culture effectively.
