The importance of the education of Chinese culture is widely accepted in the teaching of Chinese as the second language. The government is paying more attention to cultural communication. In the book International Curriculum for Chinese Language Education, edited and published by Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban),"the sense of culture" is listed as one of the four linguistic comprehensive application abilities. Its instructional objectives are also listed in the five levels of the course contents. As a significant part of the Chinese culture communication overseas, Confucius Institute keeps increasing the number of branches and spreading Chinese language and culture. However, comparing to the investment, the achievement is not satisfying. Some foreigners have negative opinions on the development and spread of Confucius Institute. The development and influence of the Confucius Institute still needs discussion.In recent years, communication science has gained more and more attention. It provides theoretical explanations for the communication phenomenon in people’s lives so that people are able to associate with each other and exchange information more strategically in the daily life. Though it has only been several decades that communication science becomes an independent science, the researches on Communication Science can be traced back to the ancient Greece when Aristotle did his study. It has a variety of research achievements till today. Considering the communicative characteristics of culture teaching, we review the culture communication in Teaching Chinese as the second language from a communication science point of view. Using the related theories from communication science, we analyze the process of culture communication and try to find where the problem comes from and how to enhance the communication effect.Under the globalization environment, most countries place great emphasis on cultural communication because of the safety issue and the development of their country. However, the development of China is blocking the Chinese culture communication. In order to reduce the level of conflict to our culture communication from other countries macroscopically, first we need to make one thing clear:what is the purpose of Chinese culture communication? It is to attract more people to know Chinese culture and reduce the misunderstandings and conflicts during international exchange and intercultural communication. During the spread of the culture, the intercultural sense and international view of the students can be trained. The objective is the communication, not cultural invasion. In a microscopic level, the communication of Chinese culture needs to learn from the achievements in the research of the communication effect. We will discuss from three aspects:the standard of selecting the contents to be transmitted, the basic rules of culture communication and the skills of communication.The contents of the culture communication are the base of communication activity. In order to enhance the communication effect, we need to choose the contents carefully. First, it has to be easy to accept:it should not offend the cultural taboos of the students; it also needs to obey the common moral standards. The contents should be useful and interesting to the students. The subject and the course contents should be tightly related. The amount of the information should be moderate. Second, the contents should be highly convincible:the information should be accurate, up-to-date and follow Chinese culture’s current situation.There are many factors that influence the effect of culture communication. Based on the condition of Chinese culture communication in teaching Chinese as the second language, we summarize two rules to follow in the process of culture communication from the point that the instructor can control:construct a good communication atmosphere and increase the students’sense of trust. To achieve the first one, the instructor must respect every student and his or her culture and set up a suitable emotional distance between the instructor and the student. The instructor also needs to respect the students’ideas. To achieve the second one, the instructor should have a large stock of information, a good personal cultivation and keep his or her objective stand point.In the communication science, the discovery of communication skills has been studied for a long time. Many skills have been familiar to people and widely used, such as: organizing the language logically, applying different figure of speech, using examples and emotion stimulations, etc. Based on the special characteristics of intercultural communication and the current situation of teaching Chinese as the second language and culture communication, we mainly discuss the application of the followings in the field of culture communication:"imply","two side imply","compare" and "emphasize".
