A Report On The Translation Of Chapters 1,6,7 Of Grammar

This is a report on my translation of the three chapters from Michael Swan’s book Grammar. The book is in the Oxford Introductions to Language Study Series published first by Oxford University Press and then photocopied by Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press.Michael Swan, the author, is actively involved in linguistics, especially in applied linguistics. He has been better known in China for his book Oxford Practical English Usage. He has published many articles on these topics, and has delivered lectures in many world-famous universities. As a master in language study, he knows this field well and can manage with ease. In this book, leading grammar expert Michael Swan provides readers with a contemporary overview of what grammar is, with reference to English and other languages. It asks, and attempts to answer, some rather seemingly easy but stimulating questions. The book Grammar is simple but not simplistic. It is very helpful for scholars of languages, especially for research students in this field. That is why I chose it to translate.Grammar is an academic work and needs to be treated in an academic way and with a rigorous academic attitude. This book is a general and gradual introduction to language: transitional texts which will ease people into an understanding of complex ideas. Indeed it can be said that this academic work is not essentially academic, since the three chapters I chose are included in the Survey. In view of this, the target text attempts at being fluent and cohesive on the basis of a good understanding of the source text, a precise rendering of terminologies and a consistence of academic writing styles.This is a summary of this translation practice, an analysis of the book and its academic features, and a description of the translation process and experience. From the masterpiece itself, and from translating it, I have gained a better understanding of both grammar and translation.
