In the Chinese learning process, the learning demotivation is one of the main variables restricting academic performance. However, this phenomenon is common among Madagascar students in China. The purpose of this research is to find the features of demotivation of Malaysian students when learning Chinese, and thus to give targeted feasible suggestions on improving the quality of teaching of Chinese as a foreign language. This research adopted Dornyei’s Three-Level Theory of Second Language Learning Motivation which is influential in the second language acquisition research in 1990 s as the theoretical basis. This research investigated 48 Madagascar students from the Jiang Xi Normal University, who had ever studied in Madagascar and China.Overall, the demotivation phenomenon of Madagascar students’ Chinese-learning is actually real. The learning motivation of 41 students significantly dropped. Statistical data showed first four influence factors resulting in the demotivation of Madagascar students when learning Chinese, namely sense of achievement and self-confidence loss, relations between students and teachers, homesickness, and teaching abilities and methods of teachers. The factors such as one-sided understanding of Chinese learning, instrumental motivation, learning content and collective have different impacts on students who come to China in different da ys. The factors such as one-sided attitude to Chinese learning, sense of achievement and self-confidence, relations between teachers and students, and external supervision have significantly different impacts on boy and girl students. In addition, the research found that there existed a certain inherent correlation among the factors influencing the demotivation of Madagascar students when learning Chinese. Relations between teachers and students as well as teaching abilities and methods of teachers showed a strong correlation. Relations between teachers and students and external supervision showed a moderate correlation. Finally, the author proposed some coping strategies from the 4 aspects of society, academic cycle of teaching Chinese as a foreign language, school and teacher based on the features of demotivation of Madagascar students when learning Chinese so as to help students recover enthusiasm for learning and improve their Chinese level.
