Among the distinguished writers of 1970 s and 1980 s, Yan Lianke is absolutely a special one. Looking through his novels, we can find that local world is his forever theme, and humanity is his final point. Taking "human" in his local world and "suffering" as subjects, he successfully builds a mysterious but real hometown--Palou Mountain--for all of us. Like a watchman, he shows us his views about people’s destiny, existence, desire and humanity. He not only conveys his anxiety towards the local world’s serious condition from the perspectives of geomorphology and psychology, but also expresses his thoughts about humanity from the perspectives of art and sociology.This paper begins with Yan Lianke’s analysis of humanity which exits in his works, aims at revealing his particularity in writing novels, and pries about our current intellectuals’ humanistic feelings. There three chapters in total. In the first chapter, the author of the present thesis discusses Yan’s description of the local world,which contains Palou Mountain’s natural condition, the labor’s sufferings and local customs. In the second chapter, the author explores the complex humanity in Yan’s novels. From the point of people’s survival instincts and desire money and power, the author analyzes their life consciousness after the alienation of human nature in order to show completely the complexity and variety of humanity. In the third chapter, the author explores the reasons and significance of Yan’s description of humanity in his novels, aiming at exploring the origin of his description of humanity and his aesthetic pursuit of the works through the analysis of Yan’s life experience and creation concept to evaluate his significance in the Chinese contemporary literary world.
