A Report On The C-E Translation Of“Process Pipe NDT Plan”

In this report, the author mainly discusses the Chinese-English translation project of “process pipe NDT plan”. This translation project was finished during a professional internship in 2014.The project has 18,519 Chinese characters and the author must finish the translation project within30 days. The translation project was implemented by the author and another companion.After receiving translation project, the author does a lot of preparation work, including analyzing the source text, making glossary, reading parallel text and learning the relevant translation theories of technical text, etc. In the process of translation, the author should pay attention to the overall understanding and extending of the source text. On the basis of Newmark’s translation theories on text types, the author presents difficulties of lexical level and syntactic level in Chinese-English translation process of technical text. Moreover, the author analyzes how to translate the non-subject sentences, passive sentences and long sentences in technical text.Meanwhile, the author adopts some translation skills such as conversion, ellipsis and division and integration of sentences in the translation process in order to secure accuracy and fluency of the translation and realize the communicative functions of the translation.This report summarizes the experience of translation practice in technical text and reveals that successful translation needs adequate pre-translation preparation and full comprehension of the characteristics between the source language and target language. Through this way, the translation can achieve the objective function of the original text and meet the customer’s demand.
