In the second decade of the 21st century, medical technology has taken a giant leap forward in better and longer life.Life expectation is rising year by year, however, people are facing increasing problems they have never encountered before.Modern death:how medicine changed the end of life,a medical science book about modern death and hospice care, examines how death has changed, and unfolds the implications of those changes for all of us.This report includes the translation of two chapters of the book, for not only presenting the system of western medicine, but also narrowing the gap of terminal ethics and hospice care between domestic and foreign countries. It is hoped that the translation could offer a deeper understanding about the difference of medical system between China and western countries. This report analyzes the difficulties and strategies of translating the medical science book under the Functional theories from German.Taking the specialty of the topic of the book, some meanings of terms in source language may fail to exist in the target language,or may vary in connotation due to cultural differences, which are always the trickiest that needed to be coped with in translation. Therefore, the functional theories from German are adopted, including the text type theory from Reiss,translation-oriented text analysis and so forth, for tackling difficulties in translation and building fluent reading for target text readers.
