A Study Of Pragmatic Failures In Foreign Affairs Translation In Universities And The Repair Of Interpretation

In the world of economic globalization, the internationalization and modernization of China’s higher education are developing continuously. Universities and colleges have become more active in international communication, in which foreign affairs translation is endowed with more tasks. The foreign affairs translation in universities can be applied in daily communication, professional exchange and diplomatic negotiation according to the context. Reception, academic conferences,professional lectures, cooperation agreement and negotiation, etc are covered according to the specific content. To summarize, the foreign affairs translation covers almost every field of a variety of knowledge and has political, professional, and cultural characteristics.Based on pragmatics, especially the international communication pragmatics, the actual situation of the foreign affairs translation is observed; the classification of pragmatic failures by Thomas was verified in the new context. Through the recording and transcription of many foreign affairs translation, with the method of case analysis,the examples in foreign affairs translation are analyzed in detail. In general, the pragmatic failures in foreign affairs translation can be divided into three categories:linguistic failures(pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar); pragmalinguistic failures(daily communication, professional exchange, diplomatic negotiation);sociopragmatic failure(violation of the cooperative principle and politeness principle).According to the discretionary principle in the handling of pragmatic failures in international communication, the author combines the theory of adaptation creatively and put forward the interpretation repair strategies to deal with the pragmatic failures.Negligibility maxim is adopted when the effect of pragmatic failure is slight, while in the cases of serious pragmatic failures, the adaptation of language, cooperation and politeness are necessary. After the verification of the practice in foreign affairs translation in universities, the interpretation repair strategies to deal with the pragmatic failures were proven to make up the pragmatic losses and help smoothly complete the international communication.Starting from pragmatics and translation, this research analyzed the types of pragmatic failures and verified the classification of pragmatic failures with the examples in practice. Thus, the interpretation repair strategies to deal with the pragmatic failures was put forward in foreign affairs translation in universities. This study applied theories with practice and will provide reference for the foreign affairs translation in universities. The inspiration for future researches in this field is also expected.
