A Report On The Translation Of The Oxford Handbook Of Oral History(Chapter 30)

The text of this translation report comes from one of my translation projects---the translation of Oxford Handbook of Oral History that is going to be published by the People’s Publishing House. The author is responsible for the translation of chapter 30 to chapter 32 and choose chapter 30 as the translation practice with over ten thousand English words. The book gives a detailed elaboration on the development of presenting oral history on campus and provides training methods and theoretical guidance for oral history teaching. It enables the 21 century students to interpret history with a totally different view so as to cultivate their ability of independent thinking and make contribution to the research of society.To ensure that the translation task can be completed with high quality, the author had carefully read the original text. Also, the author searched information on oral history on the Internet, including its appearance, its process of development as well as its developing situation. The author borrowed books on translation theory and adopt Skopos translation theory as guidance in the process of translation.The thesis consists of three parts, including the original text, the translation and the translation report, which is made of five sections. The first section of the translation report is the description of the translation mission, which makes a brief introduction to the translation text as well as its source and significance. The second section talks about the translation process, including the preparation work, the procedure, the revision and the proofreading. The third section is case analysis. Under the guidance of Skopos theory, together with the feature of the non-literature translation, the author extracts and analyzes some representative cases to elaborate on the translation skills and strategies used in the process of translation. The typical cases contain conversion in the voices, word order change, exact expression and other translation strategies. The fourth section summarizes the importance of translation theory and translator’s quality and responsibilities. In this part, the professional ethics, bilingual skills, encyclopedic knowledge and the ability of using the internet are particularly discussed. The last part is the general summary of the translation report, in which the author summarize the deficiencies of this translation report particularly.
