An E-C Translation Report On The Oxford Handbook Of Food,Politics And Society (Chapter 12)

The issue of food subsidies is one of the concerns of the international community.It plays an important role in improving people’s livelihood,political stability and economic development.The Oxford Handbook of Food,Politics and Society,published by Oxford University Press in 2015,as the title suggests,is a book about food,politics and society.Chapter 12 discusses the issue of food subsidies in India.It is selected for this translation practice as the source text.The translation report describes the preparations made for the translation task,elaborates on the difficulties encountered in the translation practice,and presents a case analysis.Case analysis is the main body of the report.It analyzes many translation examples based on the “Comprehension,Expression and Adaptation”(CEA)framework proposed by Li Changshuan.Among them,“Comprehension” introduces how to accurately comprehend polysemy and clarify structural ambiguity in sentences.“Expression” centers on faithfully reproducing the source text by employing some translation techniques including conversion,division,and restructuring.“Adaptation”presents the flexible adjustment of the translation to conform to the culture of the target language and promote communication,involving using Chinese idioms,flexible addition and omission and flexibly dealing with figures of speech.By this translation practice,it is found that mastering solid bilingual knowledge of English and Chinese and being proficient in the translation techniques are crucial to solving the problems encountered in the translation process.In addition,comprehension is of significance in the translation process.Only when the translator correctly understands the original text,can he or she be loyal to the original information.
