With the development of society, people’s demand of spiritual life is increasingly improved. And the public art gradually appears to dotted about the environment. The Public art which exists in the public space can beautify the urban environment.At the same time,as an art form, it can also have the emotion exchange with people,and infuse the value of social culture. It appeared in the 1960’s of America and quickly spread to all over the world. Nowadays, the development of the public art in China is rapidly increasing both in quantity and form. However, with the wave, a lot of problems appeared in some of these works. For example, many public arts have machine-made shapes and vacuous contents. Most important, they are lack of expression and thinking about deep culture of the city characteristics. Such works usually become superficial cultural fast food and cannot take the real public art pursuit which is gussied up the urban environment and maked people pleasant. The way to develop the public art in the future has become a problem that we should think about.The first chapter states the concept, history and development process about public art. And it takes the public art audiences as the breakthrough point to prove that the public art which can be entertaining people is widely recognized, with development analogy analysis of the other entertaining forms of culture.Aimed at the problem about using mass entertainment on public art, this paper selected 10 cases of recreational public art at home and abroad(including six positive case and four negative cases)to analyze how to create the recreational public art.And draws the conclusion through the positive and negative contrast analysis : entertainment has the duality, if artists have pursued the entertainment overly in creation, the works will present vulgar and lack of connotation. At the same time, the paper put forward some suggestions to artists for avoiding excessive entertainment that they need to be closed to people’s lives and considered about people’s emotional needs.Finally, the writer analyzed the main form of the public art in China at present. According to the analysis, the conclusions can be drawn: due to the Chinese situation and traditional culture, entertainment is not suitable for the big public art which used to represent the image of the city and the memory of a great man or history. But they can focuse on developing the small public art type such as small sculptures, the mural and some public facilities. Through the analysis above, the conclusions could points the way out for the recreational public art development.
