A Report On C-E Translation Of Henan People’s Lifestyle(Excerpt)

It is the transition of China’s development now when all kinds of contradiction appears at home and abroad. Regional economy gap causes the appearance of regional discrimination. At the same time, in order to introduce Chinese culture and show positive image of China better, the government of China has done a lot of work such as year of Chinese culture in different countries. Especially, the Chinese Screen in Times Square, New York has become a window to show great charm of China and publicize Chinese culture directly. However, it is not much that the special induction for China’s human character and features especially for a certain region of China.The source text of this translation project comes from Chapter One, the Current Situation of Henan People, in the book Henan People’s Lifestyle. This chapter describes Henan’s history, culture, humanity, natural environment and developing history of city and show Henan People’s characters in detail and at the same time it probes into all kinds of reasons for Henan People’s character. This practical report firstly analyzes the source text and then makes sure that the source text is a cultural text to spread Henan culture and publicize good images of Henan People. Then it analyzes the difficulties in translation of the source text which are Chinese culture-loaded words, Chinese long sentences, Chinese four-letter- words. According to the analysis of the source text, the translator finds that Newmark’s communicative translation theory is suitable to the translation of the source text. This theory emphasizes that different methods should be taken to translate different type of text and it pays more attention to the target readers’ feeling. Under the guidance of Newmark’s communicative translation theory, this practical report mainly solve difficulties to translate Chinese culture-loaded words, Chinese long sentences, Chinese four-letter- words and proverbs into English. In this process, this report probes the way to translate Chinese cultural text to English by analyzing the use of literal translation, liberal translation and transformation in Chinese-English translation. At the same time, it will offer reference to others and contribute to improve quality of Chinese-English translation.Through the translation of this source text, this practical report aims to introduce Henan culture which is one representative of China’s culture. At the same time, it can help foreign people know more about Henan People and their culture and it will also make contribution to the publicity of China’s culture.
