Fuzziness is an essential attribute of everything. Originally used in mathematics, fuzzy method comes to be widely applied to many disciplines, including photography. In the artistic creation of photography, clarity and fuzziness are two forms of expression, with the former being relative while the latter absolute. Neither of them enjoys superiority over the other as they are beauty in different forms. Yet from the perspective of artistic expression, fuzziness is more appealing than clarity and it further awakes viewers’ imagination. With the diversification of artistic style and angle of appreciation, realism can no longer meet people’s demand for photography. As a result, photographers create fuzzy photographic images with various techniques of expression.This article defines what fuzzy photographic image is. There are three reasons accounting for the fuzziness of a photographic image. First of all, fuzziness is the essential attribute of things. Secondly, fuzziness is part of the photographer’s aesthetic taste, emotion and creation process. Thirdly, while viewers are enjoying the images, the biases of their visual language give rise to fuzziness of their visual thinking. In combination with living examples, this article also sheds light on the form of expression, the causes and the value of fuzzy photographic image as well as how to create fuzzy photographic works.In the end, evaluation is given on fuzzy photographic image. Fuzziness is as much a form of expression of photographic images as clarity, but it is more expressive, boasts unique value and marks the progress of photographic creation. In the future, photographic creation will probably be more diversified.
