Ancient village is the civilization co-bred by human and the nature, and the most authentic record of history. In the vast land of China, many small villages with deep-rooted culture spread all over the country, and some have been developed and utilized, some still unknown. It is in the multicultural villages, that the historical gene of Chinese civilization is well preserved. At present, most academic researches are about ancient village in the south China, and the researches on the villages of Central Plains region are relatively little. Therefore, most of the old towns and villages has been unknown to people. With the further study of the ancient villages and the strengthening of the protection of cultural relics, people begin to pay close attention to these unknown and valuable villages. But under the impact of economic globalization, more and more ancient villages are facing unscientific planning and excessive exploitation, so that their culture gradually disappeared in the people’s vision. Therefore, the protecting work brooks no delay. This paper selected countries published "the first batch of traditional villages in China-- Dongyue village, Wenshu town, in Guangshan county of Xinyang city, Henan province" to investigate and study. After field visits, we found that Dongyue Village is not only beautiful in nature, its housing construction also suits local conditions and complies with nature, embodied with the philosophy of “harmony of nature and human”; the village contains a large number of traditional and unique houses, whose blending of architectural style not only maintains the cultural vitality of their own, but also enrichs the Dongyue people’s historical memory. In order to better protect and continue this kind of memory, based on the historical and cultural background of Dongyue village, according to historical records and field investigation, this paper analyzed and discussed comprehensively about the landscape elements, architectural heritage, religious belief, folk custom, protection status and existent problems from the perspective of sociology, cultural ecology and tourism. Moreover, the author also did a lot of the relevant theoretical research abroad, hoping to break the limitations, expand our horizons, and find effective ways to protect the ancient village. At last, the author put forward the future development orientation- Eco village model, with the hope to achieve sustainable development and utilization of the village, providing research ideas and reference for the protection and development of villages. This paper is divided into four chapters:The first part is the introduction, which defines the related research object, systematically discusses the current situation and the achievements of the domestic and foreign research about ancient villages, as well as the research methods, purpose and significance of this thesis. The second part mainly studies the current situation and value system of Dongyue village. The third part mainly discusses the protection and use of Dongyue village, studying the problem of the protection of the ancient villages from the angles of sociology, the cultural ecology and tourism. The fourth part studies the development mode of the ancient villages. Taking the successful experience of global village as basis, it points out that tourism is not the only way for the village development, and puts forward some effective and feasible suggestions. Finally, the conclusion part points out the innovation points and deficiencies of this paper, showing clearly the direction for the follow-up study.
