The 21 st century is an era of information technology. The development of information technology can update teaching methods. multimedia-assisted instruction has become a trend and even basic requirement in teaching. Meanwhile, multimedia technology has been widely applied to classroom teaching. It can activate the classroom learning atmosphere, improve students’ interest in learning English, broaden learners’ horizons, and also improve the efficiency of classroom teaching greatly. Multimedia is a double-edged sword in English teaching, although it has so many advantages. Only when teachers make a proper use of it, can it promote and improve the teaching efficiency. Otherwise, it will block the teaching process. The effect of multimedia-assisted small classes English teaching is the research purpose of this thesis.Taking the constructivism and multiple intelligence as the theoretical background to make a investigation of the effect of multimedia-assisted English teaching in Grade 8 at Changsha Foreign Language School, this thesis aims to give some enlightenments in establishing a model of English teaching assisted by multimedia. With a combination of teaching practice and observations by the author, the author discusses and analyzes the real situation and the effect of multimedia-assisted English teaching in Grade 8 at Changsha Foreign Language School, and then explores the ways to improve the effectiveness of English teaching with multimedia in order to have a proper understanding of multimedia-assisted English teaching, a correct understanding of the traditional teaching method which is related to media teaching. Based on the discussion, the thesis puts forward an idea of combining two teaching methods together in English classroom.The experiment is conducted among the English teachers and students in Grade 8 at Changsha Foreign Language School, including the questionnaire, experimentation and interview. Through the survey, it can be found that Changsha Foreign Language School has equipped with good multimedia teaching equipment, small-class teaching model, and most teachers and students hold a positive attitude toward the multimedia-assisted English teaching. Although there are many advantages of using multimedia, it also reflects some problems in English teaching, such as the bad quality of courseware, the lack of maintaining of devices and so on. The paper lists the experimental results,, and also gives some suggestions to improve the effect of multimedia-assisted English teaching based on the theoretical discussion of the results.There are some limitations and shortcomings in the thesis; the study also needs further studies.
