Study On The History Of Chinese Architectural Heritage Surveying And Mapping

Architecture heritage measurement is an important basis of architecture history and theoretical research and the protection of architecture heritage. China’s undertaking of architecture heritage measurement has gone through 80 years of development. Since it has not been given the due emphasis for a long time, many bottleneck problems such as imperfect management mechanism, lack of standard requirement, shortage in professional talents exist, seriously impeding the benign development of cultural heritage research and protection. This paper widely looks through the major measurement result and relevant historical literature of major academic groups and scientific research institutions in the field of architecture heritage measurement, visits experts, scholars and technical staffs, and collects a lot of historical materials and information. On the basis of this, it has systematically sorted out the historical evolution of the practice and concept development of China’s architecture heritage measurement since China Construct Society started to introduced western measurement method to investigate ancient architecture, fully investigated critical events, practice result, theory and technology development in various historical periods, and tried to sum up the development trend of architecture heritage measurement in different historical stages, providing great references for solving the bottlenecks in the field of measurement.This paper carries out the discussion according to the chronological order of China’s architecture heritage measuring history. First of all, the paper has reviewed the architecture investigation measurement practice by western and Japanese scholars, analyzed the background and condition for Society for the Study of Chinese Architecture to carry out architecture heritage measurement, investigated the architecture heritage measurement activities carried out by Society for the Study of Chinese Architecture and Peiping Commission for the Preservation of Cultural Relics in the era of Republic of China, analyzed the historical significance of the above-mentioned activities and the role of transformation from ancient architecture maintenance to cultural relic protection project. Secondly, the paper has divided the architecture heritage measurement process after 1949 into two stages with the year 1980 and illustrated the practice process, management mechanism, technology concept, and talent training of cultural heritage measurement. Then, the paper has carried out a case study of the ancient architecture measurement history of Tianjin University as a miniature of the architecture heritage measurement by institutions of higher learning after the establishment of People’s Republic of China. Finally, it has analyzed and discussed the mistakes, controversies or long neglected important problems in the field of architecture heritage measurement.This paper tries to examine the cause and effect, learns from the history, launches a new research direction in the research field of macro architecture history, and pushes forward the healthy development of China’s architecture history research and architecture heritage protection undertaking.
