Mo Yan becomes famous throughout the world as he was awarded the 2012 Nobel Prize in Literature. As a writer of great popularity, he is paid more attention with the maturity of his writing. Researches on his work are in progress systematically and comprehensively. But there are problems because of his prodigious creations. Researches at present are underway on a macroscale, while particulars with special meanings in his work are being neglected. It is the experience in his childhood that makes his distinctive style of writing and creates roles like mixed-blood. Based on the close reading and comparison with other relevant works, this paper will describe the existence of mixed-blood and draw out the meaning in literary and intellectual history. The complex of emotions, which appears when Mo Yan faces the Chinese and western culture shock, will be comprehended, as well as his excellent technique of image depiction.The paper consists of three parts: introduction, main body and conclusion. The introduction includes five aspects as follow: General situation, achievements of study, approaches, target and research background. There are three chapters in the main body. The first part is to summarize the tragic existence of mixed-blood. Dilemma and tragedy of mixed-blood existence will be announced by analyzing three parts of existence, which are the birth, the living and the death. In the second part, there is a study on connotation of the mixed-blood image. The furtherance that mixed-blood image works on intellectual history will be discussed by studying the humanitarianism showed on the mixed-blood and the close attention to the Chinese and western culture. Then there is a research on the artistic value in the third part. It is not only a succession but also a transcendence for the writer to create an image like mixed-blood by comparing with other images. Inspiration for the image creation is sought in the end. The main body discloses the dilemma of mixed-blood existence, and points out its existing significance. The conclusion is a summary to the paper, and moreover, it shows the way to employ for the study in the future.
