With the economic globalization and the development of modern science and technology, universities and colleges have to not only shoulder the mission of cultivating high-end talents, but even take on the responsibility of enhancing the comprehensive national strength and improving international competitiveness. As the world’s two largest economies, both China and the United States attach great importance to the change and development of higher education. They firmly believe higher education is the key to the future economic development. "Where do we go from here?" has become a frequent question asked by higher education institutions. Survival of the Fittest:Shifting Contours of Higher Education in China and the United States is co-edited by Qi Li and Cynthia Gerstl-Pepin, professors from Beijing Normal University. This book consisting of twelve chapters, written by scholars from both countries, explores the similarities and differences, changes and challenges of higher education in China and the United States, and tries to find the development direction in the future for higher education.The translation aims to offer an opportunity for scholars in education sector and readers caring about education to understand the current situation and developing tendency, providing reference for the reform taking place in Chinese higher education institutions. According to Newmark’s Text Typology, the source text is classified as an informative text on the basis of rigorous organizing, serious style and rigid logic. The translation tries to be accessible to readers and conform to the norms of academic paper by means of communicative translation. This report sums up the problems, lessons as well as experience in translating the titles of the book, specialized terms and complex sentences, especially the translation of the abstracts. In conclusion, communicative translation plays a guiding role in translating informative texts.
