Cliffside carving means the ancient people using natural stone walls to record events, which has great historical value. Tongtianyan Grottoes is located in the northwest suburb, about 10km from Ganzhou urban area, and people left lots of inscriptions on the wall of the cliffs since Song Dynasty. There are 149 segments of ancient cliffside carvings in Tongtianyan Grottoes,128 of them are extant and the others were lost. These inscriptions can provide valuable information to the research of Ganzhou local culture and related historical events. On the one hand, the author sort out geographical location distribution and type classification of Tongtianyan cliffside carvings through field investigating and referring to the relevant documents, and then analyze its historical value, literary value, calligraphic value and aesthetic value. On the other hand, after analyzing the history of Tongtianyan and current historic cultural sites, we can know Wang Yang-ming and his poem have significant influence. So the author shifted the perspective to Wang Yang-ming’s government in Southern Jiangxi and giving lectures in Tongtianyan, which is important to the formation and development of Yang-ming’s Theory. The author wants to show the value and charm of the ancient Chinese sculpture art through personal research, and protect the existing cliff inscription better.
