A Report On The Translation Of Toward The Ocean

This is a translation report on the translation of the commentary of Toward the Ocean. The material translated by the author includes the first and the second episodes, which are to be discussed in this report.Toward the Ocean thoroughly arranges China’s five thousand years history of oceanic culture with the development of western ocean exploitation. It mainly introduces the relationship between the ocean and the human beings, the development of the history of China’s navigation and the developmental results of China’s coastal defense. How to translate the commentary about Chinese historical culture was a big challenge for the author. This report analyzes and discusses how the commentary about Chinese historical culture were processed in actual translation. This translation report consists of four main parts: The first part is an introduction of the translation project, including the background of the translation task, task description, the translation values and the structure of this report. The second part is an introduction of research background, including the research status of the translation of the commentary and subtitles, language features of the task, problems in the process of translation, and translation methods. The third part is a case analysis. In this part, the author specifically analyzes the translation of the commentary about Chinese historical culture, including the translation of the titles of the first and the second episodes, the translation of Chinese feudal culture, the translation of Chinese classics, the translation of Chinese place names and the translation of Chinese folk culture. The last part is the conclusion of the lessons and experience in the process of translation, and the further study after the translation. The third part is the major one among these four parts.The contributions of this translation project are as follows: Previous translations and translation research of the text chosen have been rarely found. The author analyzes how to translate the commentary about Chinese historical culture through specific examples and how to preserve Chinese characteristics of the original text.The author hopes that the project can assist similar translation practices and provide reference for further translation of the commentary of Chinese documentaries.
