The Murals of Shengmu Temple in Fenyang are the precious works of temple mural art in Ming Dynasty. The content of the murals mainly includes the traveling, returning and daily life of Houtumu, all of which are narrative and interconnected. The figures in the murals also contains strong particularity:the mix of two traditional styles Song and Yuan Dynasty and the style of Ming Dynasty in artistic technique. The particularity reflects the state of art at that time and implies the various cultural connotations and folk beliefs. The murals are important historical materials to explore the aesthetic sense and spiritual pursuits among the people at that time as well. As a result, the study for the Murals of Shengmu Temple in Fenyang is significant not only in culture but also in art.The dissertation involves four parts to discuss the figures. The first part is the introduction including research status, research significance, The methodology and innovations of the dissertation with introducing about the history, content and influence of the murals. The second part of the dissertation explores the murals’cultural beliefs and formation of the figures. The first part analyzes the social attitudes and spiritual pursuits from the perspective of religion. In the second part, the figures and the origin edition, time, location, folk customs. In the third part, the aesthetic tendency and artistic techniques used in the murals are interpreted systematically in figure, line, color and composition based on the perspective of artistic design. In the last part, the historical status of The Murals of Shengmu Temple in Fenyang is discussed through the comparing with other temple murals in the same time based on the value of art. At the end of the part, the dissertation gives a further discussion upon the inspiration and significance of the temple murals for figures designed by modern meticulous recolor.
