| The popular science text’s readers are those who have not received professional knowledge, so the language of such texts should be plain and easy to understand. In the English popular science text, the passive voice which can objectively describe the knowledge of science and technology is frequently used, while in the Chinese popular science text, it is not the case. Thus, special attention should be paid to the translation of the passive voice in order to convey the meaning of the original text in the translation of popular science texts from English to Chinese.According to the Functional Equivalence Theory, to translate is to use the closest natural equivalent to convey the source text message in the target text. The theory emphasizes that the way in which the translated text’s readers understand and appreciate the translated text should be equivalent to the way the source text’s readers understand and appreciate the source text. The translation is not just to change the forms of the two different languages. Varied translation strategies should be used in different contexts. In the translation of the English popular science text into the Chinese popular science text, the language structure is not the most important factor but more attentions should be paid to convey the meaning of the original text.Based on the author’s practice of translating the chemical part in Science which was published by DK press, this report aims to summarize the ideas and suggestions of E-C translation strategies for the passive voice in popular science texts in the perspective of a MTI student. Under the guidance of the Functional Equivalence theory, the writer analyzes the application and function of this theory in the field of the passive voice in the popular science text and puts forward specific translation strategies including active sentences, subjectless sentences and passive sentences to guide future practice, hoping to provide inspiration and reference for other translators. |
