With the development of science and technology,science-report translation has become an important part in scientific communication among countries.Compared with other literary styles,a science report enjoys distinctive features in terms of words, grammatical structures and expressions. The usage of passive voice can avoid many disadvantages introduced by subjectivity. Therefore,it is widely used in science reports. When translating science reports, the translator should be faithful to the meaning of original texts and convey it objectively and concisely on the basis of a thorough understanding of its inner logic while putting it in accordance with the expressions of target languages. The author chooses examples from Chapter 23 in UNESCO Science Report to analyze E-C translation of passive-voice sentences under the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory. With numerous illustrations and affluent datum,UNESCO Science Report is extremely informative. The authors of UNESCO Science Report used a large number of passive voice sentences to state facts.Accordingly,it is reasonable that the translation of passive voice would have a great impact on the overall quality of the translation. As an important theory that guides translation research and practice,Functional Equivalence emphasizes that the way in which the translated text's readers understand and appreciate the translated text should be equivalent to the way the source text's readers understand and appreciate the source text.Translation is not just to change the forms of two languages.Different translation strategies are chosen accordingly depending on different contexts.Functional Equivalence is used in the practice of E-C translation of passive-voice sentences in translating UNESCO Science Report in order to improve the translation quality.Under the guidance of Functional Equivalence theory, the author takes some examples from UNESCO Science Report to discuss about the problems encountered and to explore the translation strategies of passive voice.Having analyzed some typical examples of UNESCO Science Report, the author puts forward two kinds of translation strategies: translating passive voice into passive sentences and translating passive voice into active sentences. This report attempts to provide some suggestions on the translation of passive voice in order to promote the standardization and accuracy of the translation of science reports.
