| In today’s society, with the accelerated development of economic and cultural globalization, popular science works,as one of the most important media for scientific and technological exchange, have gradually become an indispensable part of enriching people’s spiritual life.Popular science texts are a combination of science and literature, whose function is to convey accurate scientific knowledge in a easy-to-understand language. The Grieving Brain,as a popular science text,is of high accuracy and objectivity, and also has its own distinct features in terms of vocabulary, grammatical structures, and expressions.Passive voice can avoid the disadvantages brought by the author’s subjectivity,so that it is widely used in the text. However, due to the significant differences between English and Chinese passive sentences, translating English passive sentences into Chinese and conforming to the expression habits of the target language is a great challenge for the translator. The functional equivalence theory proposed by the translation theorist,Eugene Nida, holds that a translator should reproduce the content of the original text with the closest natural language on the basis of preserving its original form and pay more attention to meaning while focusing on form. This translation report is divided into five parts. The first chapter is the introduction, presenting the text source, research status, and significance of this translation task;the second chapter is the task description, mainly introducing the background of the task, the features of the source text and the difficulties of the translation task;the third chapter describes the process of the translation practice, including the pre-task preparation, the translation process and the post-task control;the fourth chapter mainly focuses on the cases analysis of passive voice by introducing four different translation strategies, including translation into Chinese passive voice, active sentence,non-subject sentence and judgment sentence;the fifth chapter is the conclusion, which summarizes the gains and shortcomings of this translation practice. The final goal is to provide reference suggestions for the translation of passive sentences in popular science texts, and promote the standardization and accuracy of popular science translation. |
