A Report On The Translation Of English House-leasing Contracts

As market economy prevails, the lease which is an indispensable production factor has become one of most widely used contracts. As China is becoming more and more open to the outside world, more and more Chinese go abroad for education, working, living, settlement, etc. As a result, English house leasing contracts are more and more widely used. So, translation of English house leasing contract into Chinese is of great importance.The report discusses the English-Chinese translation project consisting of three English house leasing contracts which are all authentic and standard. The three ones contain 10,257 words and are translated independently by myself. The contents of this translation report mainly include the following three parts: 1. The text characteristics of English house leasing contract. 2. The difficulties in translation and the solution to them. 3. The translation strategies and specific translation methods applied in the English-Chinese translation of English contract. The third part is the core content of this essay, in which I explore some specific translation methods by case analysis under the guidance of Newmark’s text type theory.This report shows that we should learn the related knowledge of law, study the feature of contract text and gain more relevant professional knowledge before we translate this kind of professional contract texts. Under the guidance of semantic translation, I use the following specific translation methods in translating these three contracts. First, on lexical level the methods include addition, combination and borrowing. Second, on syntactic level the methods include separation and sequence adjustment. The professionality and accuracy of contract texts have increased the difficulty of contract translation. In order to improve translation quality, a translator must accumulate relevant law knowledge and translation methods constantly.
