Translation Strategies For The English Attributive Clauses In The Popular Science Text

Nowadays, both accuracy and “tasty” are paid much attention by readers while reading the popular science text. As a result, it is a new challenge for translators. This report is based on the translation practice of Science when the writer studied in Beijing Institute of Technology. In the process of translation, the writer has found that English attributive clauses are commonly used in popular science texts, which added some difficulties in translating the text. Under such a situation, the writer of this report chose English attributive clauses translation to study.The writer adopts case study as the research method. On the basis of the translation practice, the writer has collected some typical English attributive clauses, applies Christiane Nord’s text analysis model to popular science translations, and summarizes translation strategies on English attributive clauses.The report is composed of translation project description, translation theory, cases study, translation process, and summary, etc. In this report, the writer emphasizes how to translate English attributive clauses with Nord’s text analysis model: translating the attributive clause into a prepositive attributive, translating the attributive clause and the main clause into coordinate clause, translating the attributive clause into a clause with the antecedent as its subject, translating the attributive clause into an adverbial clause, etc. The report provides such methods to deal with the translation of English attributive clauses. Through the study of the translating methods of attributive clauses and the application of the methods in translating the text, the writer summarizes that while translating attributive clauses, the translator should above all accurately understand the meaning of the original text, analyze the structure of the attributive clause and find the very antecedent it modifies. The translator should flexibly adopt appropriate translating methods with a full understanding of the context, and thus offer the clear translation which is “functional plus loyal” to the original text.
