| The source text of this translation practice is selected from Climate Change and the Role of Education which focuses on climate change and related education, which exerts crucial role in promoting individual and communities’ participation in mitigating and adapting to climate change. The source text belongs to the social science text and contains a large number of attributive clauses which are featured by well-organized structure and strict logic. The translator chooses attributive clauses as the research object.Sentence structures in English and Chinese are different, which poses great difficulty to translation.According to the theory of functional equivalence, the translation should not be limited to the consistency of language or text, but should achieve the consistency of the functions of the original language and the target language.Combining the syntactic features of the English and Chinese expressions, the translator chooses functional equivalence theory to guide the practice of translation.Combination, division and conversion are used in the translation of attributives clauses.Combination can be adopted to translate the short attributive clauses which modifies and limits the antecedent. The attributive clauses whose structure is long as well as those attributive clauses which is loosely related to the main clause could be translated into coordinate clauses or independent clauses by the strategy of division.Conversion is adopted to translate the attributive clauses which function as adverbial clauses. This paper explores the translation methods of attributive clauses, thus helping scholars to further explore the approaches to attributive clauses translation under the guidance of functional equivalence. This report is divided into five chapters. The first chapter briefly introduces the source text and the structure of the thesis. The translation procedures are presented in the second chapter. The third part mainly illustrates functional equivalence theory and attributive clauses.Chapter four is the case study which illustrates different translation strategies of attributive clauses including combination, division and conversion with the guidance of functional equivalence. The fifth chapter concentrates on the findings and limitations during the translation practice. |
