On Translation Strategies Of Attributive Clauses In EST Translation

With the changes of science and technology each passing day, English for science and technology has played a more and more important role in promoting the progress of science and technology. In EST translation, the translation of attributive clauses is not only a difficult part, but also of great priority, for the quality of which is directly related to the quality of the whole translation.As the basis of translation, understanding is a process of interaction and complement integrated with three levels:syntactic structure, semantic relation and linguistic performance. Among them, analysis of syntactic structure can find out the surface structure of the sentence, discrimination of semantic relation is able to reveal the deep meaning of the sentence, while analysis of linguistic performance enables the identification of the actual function of attributive clauses according to the context. Therefore, from the perspective of the above three levels, this paper will analyze and discuss the understanding and translation of attributive clauses in detail based on their varied types.First of all, this article discusses three translation strategies from the level of syntactic structure and illustrates with examples of the two classifications of attributive clauses: restrictive attributive clauses and non-restrictive attributive clauses. Second, this article analyzes the translation methods intended to reflect the internal logic of attributive clauses from the level of semantic relation, that is, the translation methods for dealing with attributive clauses implied with adverbial functions:translating them as subordinate complex sentences expressing logics of reason, result, time, condition, purpose and concessions. Finally, from the pragmatic perspective, on the basis of introducing the pragmatic translation theory, this article discusses different translation methods in view of different roles and functions of attributive clauses in their actual contexts.
