As science and technology has developed by leaps and bounds nowadays, the public's desire for science and culture is growing day by day.As an important carrier of popularizing science and culture, the translation of popular science texts is of profound significance to provide the public with scientific insights.Cooler,Smarter, compiled by the Union of Concerned Scientists,is aimed at proposing personal solutions to global warming. The translation material for this report, the foreword and the first part,is excerpted from Cooler,Smarter. The selected chapters mainly describe the evidence of global warming, the factors that cause this phenomenon and the impact of individual actions on global warming. There exist a large number of restrictive attributive clauses in this typical popular science text, making the translation practice a more difficult task.Guided by the Text Typology Theory, this study further explores the translation strategies for restrictive attributive clauses in popular science text in order to provide some reference for research on the translation of popular science texts. From the grammatical level, the translator divides restrictive attributive clauses into four categories according to relatives, relative pronoun, preposition+relative pronoun, relative adverb, and omitting relatives, and sums up the corresponding translation methods via the case study. The five methods involved are as follows: postposition, combination, and translating into pre-modifier,“S+V” structure and adverbial clauses. This report is divided into five chapters: Chapter One is the introduction of the translation task and significance and structure of the report;Chapter Two summarizes the whole process of translation task, including the preparations before translation, the process of translation and proofreading after translation;Chapter Three gives a brief overview of Text Typology Theory and analyzes the text type of the source text;Chapter Four classifies restrictive attributive clauses according to relatives and elaborates related translation strategies by means of the case study. In the last chapter, the translator points out the findings and limitations of this translation project.
