Pan Tianshou is a very important person of the Chinese painting in the twentieth century, a master of spring flower and-bird painter like Wu changshuo and Qi Baishi. The purpose of his painting is to find the internal problems from traditional and to solute the conflict between the traditional and the modern, the innovation is mainly on his composition. He breaks through the previous mode of composition, then founded the new type of composition, this type of composition is the time spirit reflection,and also makes the transformation from tradition to modern come ture. This paper tried to proof importance of composition through the analysis of pan works, Pan’s freehand brushwork in traditional Chinese painting flowers and birds’ paintings composition is the breakthrough.This paper discussed Pan’s composition from four aspects. First, the evolution of flower and-bird painting composition and Pan’s composition theory, then the formation of Pan’s composition style, the third is the characteristics of Pan’s composition style, at last is about the innovation and valuation of Pan’s theory and the influence to the later generations, especially to Wang Hanshan. After these discussions we know the innovation of Pan’s work is concentrated on his composition, so the research has important value and practical significance.
